Jules Verne enjoyed living in Amiens. He called it a “levelheaded, polite, even-tempered town” with a “cordial and enlightened society.” It offered him more benefits. It was “close enough to Paris to enjoy its reflection without the insufferable noise and sterile agitation.” Best of all, Amiens was near his beloved Le Crotoy in the Baie de Somme, where he kept a boat named after his son, Le Saint-Michel.
Perhaps, the grandest event in Jules Verne life happened in Amiens. It’s where he met the love of his life. On a visit to Amiens to serve as best man for the wedding, he met and married Honorine de Viane Morel. From 1869 to 1871 the couple lived there, and it proved an inspirational period, one which saw the birth of his best-selling novel, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, much of which he’d written on his boat.
Jules Verne incorporated his passion for geography into his writing. His view of the world continues to enrich our lives today with his inventions and insights.
Amiens is about an hour from Paris by train. You can visit the father of science fiction writer’s luxurious home where he spent 18 years in the later part of the 19th century. His house is a museum that is alive with the actual furniture and memories from Jules Verne and his writing life. His rooms have the 
same furnishing as when Verne created Phileas Foggy and Captain Nemo.
