Do remember reading Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. His stories still live on the page, in the movies, on Broadway and in our heart. Stevenson, a literary celebrity during his lifetime, now ranks among the 26 most translated authors in the world. His literary genius grew from his travels. Travel fed his imagination and creative genius.  California

silverado museumRobert Louis Stevenson Silverado Museum houses thousands of objects representing the writer’s life from childhood to his last years. Some of the highlights include an ornate mahogany writing desk that Stevenson owned when he penned Treasure Island, his toy soldiers, and rare first editions of his works.

Stevenson House located in Monterey, CA. is the home where Stevenson lived while waiting for his future bride to obtain a divorce. He lived in The French Hotel, formerly a boarding house, and is now called the Stevenson Hotel. His walks on the Monterey Coast provided the setting of his Treasure Island. The California State Park’s StevensonHouseCollection gives an extensive listing of  Stevenson’s objects on display at this home.

New York

Robert Louis Stevenson Memorial Cottage in the Adirondack Mountains is where Stevenson lived during the winter in 1887-1888. During his stay here he worked on Master of Ballantrae. StevensonCottageLife offers interesting details on the writer’s inspiration for this novel and his other prolific writings during his stay at Saranac Lake location.
